The Day My Dad Could No Longer Wait

My father was a proud man. Tall, dignified — the kind of man who dressed well even on a Wednesday. He was diabetic and hypertensive, and for all the ways those conditions marked his body, nothing stripped his dignity faster than what came next: he could no longer hold his urine for more than an hour.

Nobody told me what that would look like as his caregiver. Nobody sat me down and said, "Here's what the next chapter of your life looks like." I just walked into it — and I pushed through it, because that's what you do for the people you love.

The Diaper Trap Nobody Talks About

I did what any devoted child would do. I bought adult diapers. Dozens and dozens per week. I eventually got a subscription — they'd deliver for a month, auto-deduct the money. I thought I had solved the problem. I hadn't. I had just signed up for a different one.

The waste was staggering. My trash filled up faster than I could manage it. The smell didn't wait for official collection days, so I had to call the waste company more often than scheduled. They increased my rate for off-route calls. Then they told me that with 80% of my waste being medical, I needed to hire a specialist medical waste disposal company. Another cost. Another invoice. I'm not writing this looking for sympathy. I'm writing it because I know you know this feeling. You're either living it right now, you watched someone in your family live it, or you're terrified it's coming.

My father passed away in early 2024. We gave him the best rest we could. And when the house went quiet — when there were no more diapers to order, no more sheets to change, no more midnight care calls — I was left with a silence full of questions.

Not grief questions. Not regret questions. What if questions.
